GITAM Institute of Technology (GIT) was established in the year 1980 by a group of eminent intellectuals and industrialists under the headship of Dr. M. V. V. S. Murthi, now lead by Mr. Sri Bharat, a young educationalist and entrepreneur.

Over the years, the Institute has revived into a full-fledged technological institute offering a wide range of programmes in diverse branches of engineering.  The Institute always revitalize itself to the changing trends and needs of the Corporate Sector and in the same band, offering Six UG Programs with latest specializations of Artificial Intelligence (AIML), Data Science (DS), Internet of Things (IOT), VLSI, Radar & Automation, Electrical Hybrid Vehicle (EHV), Smart Manufacturing (SM).  It also offers  Nine most constructive PG programs in various engineering disciplines and Ph.D. Programmes. The courses offered go beyond class room learning and aim at development of students into effective and efficient individuals, technocrats and thorough professionals.  Today GITAM is one of the most sought after centres of higher education in the country. 

The Institute has been at the forefront of innovation for 40 years, doing significant research in emerging areas. The Institute continues seeking solutions to vital technological problems and impart domain skill-set to all stake holders. Intensive industry-academia interface enables the students to have hands-on experience which strengthens their employment potential.  In order to be exposed to international standards and emerging industrial expertise, the Institute is having Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) with foreign Universities.  To quote some, University of Texas Arlington, SUNY-B, Central Michigan University, Illinois Institute of Technology and with esteemed industries both core and software like BSNL, SAMEER, Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, BARC, TCS, IBM, Ericsson, C-DAC, Boga-R, etc. Experiential learning provided through industry immersion, internships, experimental learning, projects and surveys greatly enhances the employment opportunities of the students of GIT. The institute is often the first choice of many corporate majors in search of quality human resources.

The learner centered teaching methodology with need based curriculum designed by academic experts prepares GIT graduates to successfully meet academic and corporate challenges. Flexible choice based credit system incorporating outcome based educational objectives offered by the institute provides opportunity for Cafeteria approach, interdisciplinary and skill based learning.

The institute is endowed with competent, well qualified and committed faculty to deliver world-class, research & skill -based education to students.   Most of them are engaged on research, sponsored by DST, UGC, MoEF, DBT, HPCL, DRDO, CVRDE, etc. The faculty and students have obtained and filed a good number of patents in the areas of Satellite Communications, composites, bio products, product development and lubricants in the last three years. The academic departments of the institute have undertaken a good number of consultancy projects, offering their expertise in the areas of air pollution, structural designs, assessment of structural stability, rehabilitation of structures, traffic studies, energy audit, material testing, nano coatings, composites, etc. to GVMC, Visakhapatnam Port Trust, Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, HPCL, AP State Housing Corporation, VUDA, etc.  The state of the art labs and the central research labs on campus provide excellent opportunities for ground breaking research and consultancy.

The students of the Institute excel not only in curricular activities but also in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities viz., participation in Science Activity Centre (GUSAC), Professional Bodies like IEEE, CSI, ISTE, IETE, IGBC, ISOI, PES, EWB etc, Cultural Club (Kalakrithi), sports competitions and social service activities through NCC, NSS, Rotaract etc. GITAM centre for incubation and entrepreneurship development is engaged in encouraging the students to ideate, analyse, process, product development and finally leading to start-ups.

The institute has more than 25,000 alumni who occupied prominent positions as researchers, civil servants, CEOs, Vice Presidents, academicians and entrepreneurs in prestigious institutions and organizations all over the world.  GIT’s focus has been to ensure the development of a research environment in the institution conducive to quality learning, through exposure to best practices, and promotion of innovation and creativity.
