The department was separated from Mechanical Engineering department in 2004 although B.E. in Production Engineering was started in the year 1981 itself. At present, the department offers B. Tech in Mechanical (Manufacturing and Management) which is restructured to B. Tech in Industrial Engineering from 2010-11. The curriculum covers all aspects of Mechanical, Production and Industrial Engineering. The department also offers M. Tech in Industrial Engineering and Management and Ph. D programmes.
The department has well equipped state-of-the-art Laboratories namely Workshop, Machine shop, Foundry shop, work study & ergonomics lab, Simulation lab, Computer Aided Manufacturing lab,. Thermal Engineering lab, Heat Transfer lab and Computer Aided Design Lab..
The faculty focus their research interest on multi-disciplinary areas covering Intelligent Manufacturing, Nanotechnology , Artificial Neural Networks and Fuzzy Logic Applications, Flexible Manufacturing Systems, Automated Setup Generation in Computer Aided Process Planning, Supply Chain Management and Multi-objective Optimization for Engineering Design. The faculty published over 50 research papers in reputed journals and 02 books, during the last five years.
The department extends consultancy services to organizations like HPCL, NSTL, etc.A research project on Development of Coatings Based on Nanotechnology for IC Engine Applications, funded by DRDO, Govt. of India is in progress.
The placement record is near 100 per cent with a compensation package ranging from 3.00 Lakhs to 12.00 Lakhs per annum. The major recruiters are Quest Global, AMW, Mind Tree, TCS, Wipro, Accenture, Mahindra Satyam, i-Gate, MuSigma, Merchant Navy, Feedback Ventures, etc.
All students are mentored by faulty members as part of student counseling. Academic monitoring committee frequently monitors the class work progress and any other student/faculty grievances. Tutorial and Remedial classes are also conducted as part of the curriculum. Personality development / Communication Skills integrated into the curriculum. Extensive industry interaction is carried out through Industrial tour/ Industrial training/ Internship. Students are also involved in co-curricular and extracurricular activities. The students of the department organize annual national level student technical fests. Students also maintain local chapters of professional societies like IE(I), ISTE etc. Good number of students of the department are also part of social service clubs likeROTRACRT, NCC, NSS, etc.
