The department started in the year 1981, became autonomous in 2003 and evolved as a constituent department in GITAM Institute of Technology, GITAM from 2007. The department is NBA accredited twice in the years 2002 and 2006. Students pass out from this department with good placements and progression statistics.
The department has highly qualified faculty with high retention and varied specializations. It is well equipped with State-of-Art Laboratories.

Programme educational objectives
PEO 1: To impart knowledge of mathematics and science concepts as tools to a device and deliver efficient solutions to problems of Electronics & Communication Engineering
PEO 2: To inculcate analytical ability in the students to keep pace with changing technologies and to imbibe research culture to meet the industrial and societal needs.
PEO 3: To provide a platform for the graduate to be successful in Technical and Professional careers or develop as an entrepreneur.
PEO 4: To instill teamwork, leadership and communication skills in the student with professional, ethical and human values to be responsible citizen of the society.
Programmes Currently the department offers a Four-Year B.Tech Programme, Three M.Tech Programmes, One Six-Year Dual-Degree Programme, Ph.D. Programme and a Certificate course in VLSI Design. The department frequently organizes Workshops in VLSI Design, MATLAB, and Microwave Circuit Design etc. for faculty, students and working professionals.

Curricular aspects The department undertakes the tasks of designing the curriculum, implementing the class work and laboratories, conducting the examinations, carrying out research and taking up consultancy works etc. The curriculum of different programmes is designed with Inputs from Academicians (from IITs/NITs), Industry personnel, students, Alumni, Parents, and Researchers.
The department is presently Implementing Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) as per the guidelines of UGC and NAAC. As per the guidelines of CBCS, the department allows migration of students from other universities/institutions to GITAM after their first/second/third year of coursework with appropriate transfer of credits. The department exposes the students to wide learning avenues through Soft Skills, Industry Practices, Mini-Project, Design Practice, Programme Elective courses with Horizontal Mobility (different streams) and Vertical Mobility (specialized courses in a stream), Inter disciplinary Electives, Large Pool of Electives, Professional Societies, Extra-Curricular Activities etc.
The curriculum has provisions for students earning credits from a related industry, performing creative arts, learning foreign languages and learning management skills including entrepreneurship.
Faculty & research the department has a total of 88 Teaching Faculty (with 6 Professors, 7 Associate Professors, and 65 Assistant professors) with expertise in varied fields of specialization. 14 faculty members have Doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees and 40 members are presently working towards their Doctoral degrees. 32 faculty members had higher education (M.Tech) from IITs and NITs. 60% faculty have more than 8 years of Teaching Experience.
All the faculty members are active in carrying out their research and publish their research findings in refereed journals/conferences very frequently. Two faculty members have authored six textbooks in the fields of Electronic Devices and Circuits, Microwave Engineering and Satellite Communications. Two major research projects funded by UGC were successfully completed in the Department worth Rs. 12.7 Lakhs. One DST research project is ongoing with a fund of Rs. 21 lakhs. UGC Project ‘Instrumentation Maintenance Facility’ takes care of all the equipment of various continuant colleges and departments of GITAM. The project has a sanction of Rs. 13.61 Lakhs. One consultancy project worth 5 lakhs was carried out for NSTL Visakhapatnam.
Exclusive department research lab To promote research culture within the faculty and students of the department, the department has started a Research lab with all major software and hardware equipment made available from this place. All the Ph.D. students and M.Tech Project students utilize these computing and hardware facilities extensively.
Further, a Department level research forum is highly functional with Ph.D. students/senior faculty/industry personnel delivering/sharing research ideas with all the faculty/students of the department every week.
Student mentoring, Counseling and Support the department has a well-established and functional academic monitoring and counseling system. All students are mentored by faculty members (20 students per faculty) as part of student counseling. Academic monitoring committee frequently monitors the classwork progress and any other student/faculty grievances. Tutorial and Remedial classes are conducted for slow learners as part of the curriculum. Personality development / Communication Skills integrated into the curriculum. Extensive industry interaction is carried out through Industrial tour/ Industrial training/ Internship.
Special care for slow learners Slow learners is identified through counseling/mentoring system and mid examination performance. Special care is taken by conducting Remedial/Tutorial classes by identified faculty. Progress and improvement of the slow learners are informed to their parents regularly.
Support for advanced learners Advances learners in each class/laboratory is encouraged to carry out mini-projects, register and complete online certification courses from NPTEL/Coursera etc. More than 240 students of the department (last year) completed online certification courses from NPTEL to improve their Placement potential, technical skills, and soft skills.

Co-curricular and Extra curricular activities Students are also involved in co-curricular and extra curricular activities. The students of the department organize annual national level student technical fests every year. Students also maintain local chapters of professional societies including IETE and ISTE.390 student members are enrolled in IEEE (Signal Processing Society, Antennas, and Propagation Society) and involved in organizing technical events and the guest lecture from eminent IEEE fellows. A Good number of students of the department are also part of social service clubs like NCC, NSS, Rotaract Club, YGOI, Bhadyat etc.
