Established in the year 1980, the Civil Engineering Department offers B.Tech. (Civil Engineering), M.Tech. (Structural Engineering and Natural Disaster Management) and Ph.D. degree programs. The curriculum of B.Tech. degree covers core subjects of Structural Engineering, Hydraulics & Water Resources Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Surveying and Engineering Geology. Regular meetings of Board of Studies (BOS) are conducted to make the syllabus innovative and industry relevant. Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) is effectively implemented. Academic Monitoring Committees (AMCs) plays a crucial role in guiding our students towards their holistic development.

Teaching learning process is focussed on imparting not only technical skills in the subject but also soft skills, aspects of industry relevanceto enable students to become employable. The state-of-the-art laboratories and infrastructure facilities effectively aid teaching learning process. Student chapters of professional societies like ASCE, CII-IGBC, ISTE, IEI, EWB etc. help in honing the skills of the students.

Placements have been provided for the employable students in core companies like LNTECC, Ramky Infrastructure, Soma Enterprise Ltd., Nagarjuna Construction Company (NCC), IVRCL, Consolidated Construction Consortium Ltd., and software companies like TCS, INFOSYS, Accenture, Wipro Technologies, CTS etc. Some of the employable students are focussing on being entrepreneurs, and some others are pursuing higher studies. Students are benefitted from the teaching assistantship program under TEQIP-II (s.c.1.2), institutional scholarships, earn while you learn programs etc. Stipend for full time research scholars is offered.

The faculty are actively involved in research as reflected by their publications in peer reviewed National and International journals. The thrust areas of research have beenConcrete exposed to elevated temperatures smart transportation technologies water resources monitoring and management. The faculty are actively involved in seven funded research projects. The department offered courses in collaboration with NIT Suratkal and IIT Bombay. The department has national collaborations with Building Fire Research Centre (BFRC), NIE, Mysore, Department of Civil Engineering, Andhra University, Department of Civil Engineering, I.I.T Delhi, Department of Civil Engineering, NIT Warangal and International collaborations with Prof Anand. J Puppala, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Texas, Arlington, USA, Department of Civil Engineering, University of North Carolina, Charlotte, USA.

Various research projects like effect of cooling methods on compressive strength of fire affected concrete, use of recycled brick aggregates in concrete, restoration of kollerulake water quality using artificial wetland system etc. were completed. We also have industry institute partnership cell. Projects in vogue are facility for normal and medium strength concrete with 100% Recycled Coarse Aggregates (UGC), Drinking Water Quality Analysis and Monitoring in North Coastal Districts of Andhra Pradesh (DST-WTI), XRD and SEM studies on chemically contaminated red earth stabilized with biomedical incinerated residue & GGBS (UGC), Polices for Sustainable Water Resources: A Study of Visakhapatnam Urban Area (DST-WTI), Assessment and Strategies for Sustainable Management of Water Resources for Visakhapatnam City using RS & GIS (DST) etc. The Department has Centre for ‘Sustainable Urban Development’ (CSUD), Fire Research Centre and Centre for Water Quality.

Under the HPCL – Ambient Air Quality Monitoring and Modelling project most advance equipment, for air quality parametric monitoring, analysis worth Rs.90 lakh is procured. Our faculty have presented their research work in Kumamoto University, Japan; Heibei University, Hong Kong; Industrial and Technology Research Center, Sanya, China etc. Faculty also presented their research work at the Indian Engineering Congress, Indian Science Congress etc.Under TEQIP-II (s.c. 1.2) the department has been conducting various workshops, seminars, guest lectures where in personnel from various prominent organisations like Central Soil & Materials Research Station (CSMRS), LNT Metro (Hyderabad), Vijay Nirman Company, Halcrow Consultancy Pvt. Ltd., Survey of India, Petrofac Eng. Services Pvt Ltd. etc.

In the last five years, around 200 consultancy projects for major firms / departments like HPCL, Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA), Ship Building Centre (SBC), Hindustan Shipyard Ltd. (HSL), VPT, BHPV, Laurus Labs, APIIC-SEZ, APSRTC, UNEP, Gayatri Engineering Ltd. etc.

International Conference on Professional Engineers: Challenges in Disaster Management (ICPECDM’14), was conducted in wake of Hudhud cyclone, has formulated policies for better management of disasters and amelioration methods which serve as an input to the states’ policies on disaster management. The proceedings of this conference serve as an input to the policy formulation of ‘Visakhapatnam as Smart City’.

The department has been meeting societal needs like monitoring traffic and designingsafe road traffic junctions in and around Visakhapatnam city, Pollution Monitoring and Modelling, Geotechnical investigations, and doing social service through NSS wing as a part of the University’s social responsibility policy.
